Why do DevOps transformations keep failing when the solutions are well documented?

Andrew Clay Shafer — co-founder of Puppet and someone who’s spent 15 years helping organizations transform — has a theory. It comes from language learning research: people only learn a language to the level of their necessity.

Same with organizations. You won’t get better at DevOps if you don’t actually need to. And most companies? They’re “fine.” They can lose slowly for a very long time before anything changes.

True transformation only happens under one of two conditions: an inspired leader with enough social capital to push through change, or an existential crisis so obvious that everyone in the building knows they have to do things differently.
